ABOUT

Zhaotian Wang is a contemporary dance artist and choreographer working across live performance, dance film and interdisciplinary practice. His movement language is informed by contemporary dance, Chinese dance and street dance. This diverse training has shaped a physical approach that combines fluidity with control, strong musicality with detailed articulation, and large-scale movement with precise use of the hands, joints and upper body.

As a choreographer, Wang is interested in how movement is developed through rhythm, spatial structure, improvisation and the relationship between performers. Rather than treating choreography as a sequence of fixed steps, he builds works through physical research, task-based exploration and the gradual development of movement material. His work often focuses on transformation, tension, interruption and the ways in which the body responds to changing conditions.

Wang also explores the relationship between dance and new media. His creative process considers how movement can interact with projection, digital imagery, sound, lighting and stage design. These elements are not used simply as decoration, but as part of the choreographic environment, shaping how the audience experiences the body, space and time. Through this approach, he creates works that combine strong physical performance with a clear visual identity.

His work has been presented in professional dance and performance contexts in the UK and China, including the Edinburgh Festival, Resolution at The Place, MOVE IT, Bath Fringe Festival and Beijing LDTX Theatre. His practice spans live performance, choreography, dance film and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Wang is open to collaborations with dance companies, theatres, festivals, filmmakers, composers, visual artists and digital media practitioners. He is particularly interested in developing new performance works, interdisciplinary projects, dance films and creative commissions that bring movement into dialogue with sound, image, technology and space.
